Caring for Your Skin During Pregnancy: What to Avoid and What to Embrace
Pregnancy is a time of incredible change — not just for your body, but for your skin too. Hormonal shifts can bring on everything from that “pregnancy glow” to dryness, sensitivity, or breakouts. With so many products on the market, it’s important to know what’s safe and what’s best avoided while you’re expecting.
Ingredients to Avoid
Some common skincare ingredients aren’t recommended during pregnancy. Keep an eye out for:
-
Retinoids (Vitamin A derivatives) – Found in anti-ageing and acne products, these are best avoided as they can be harmful in high doses.
-
Salicylic acid (in high concentrations) – Low levels in cleansers may be fine, but always check with your healthcare provider first.
-
Hydroquinone and certain chemical peels – These can absorb into the bloodstream more readily and are best left until after birth and breastfeeding
- Sun Protection is Essential
Your skin can become more sensitive to UV rays during pregnancy, making daily SPF a must. Look for a broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide — these sit on top of the skin rather than being absorbed, and they’re generally considered safe for pregnancy.
- Focus on Hydration and Comfort
Hormonal changes can lead to dryness or itchiness. Choose gentle, fragrance-free moisturisers and body oils (like jojoba or almond oil) to soothe and support your skin’s elasticity. Drinking plenty of water also helps maintain hydration from the inside out.
